Burnout
And how we treat it
What is a burnout?
Burnout is a chronic state of emotional, mental and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.
Stress & burnout is a chronic state of emotional, mental and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It’s increasingly common amongst business executives and those juggling a variety of modern demands. Ongoing stress and burnout leaves you feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and feeling unable to manage.
There are a number of stages of burnout usually beginning with traits of hard work, determination and motivation with increasing demands and pressure to perform. Early signs of stress and burnout include beginning to neglect self-care and reducing time spent with friends and family, breaks, hobbies or enjoyable recreational interests. Difficulty sleeping or changes in eating habits are common.
Other symptoms include having little energy or motivation, or feeling ‘wired’ and unable to slow down or switch off. Depression and anxiety is typical alongside burnout and stress. One danger is turning to addictive substances or medication in order to keep going or to try and manage symptoms. This only worsens the stress state in the long run.
Chronic long-term stress has a serious and detrimental impact on psychological and physical health. Many people only seek help after a serious related health problem. It is important to seek professional help as burnout can have devastating effects in every area of life; mental health, physical health, relationships, family, friend and work.
